INEQUALITY BEYOND GDP: A LONG VIEW

This paper addresses international inequality in multidimensional well-being during the last one-and-a-half centuries. Inequality fell health and education since late 1920s, due to globalization of mass schooling diffusion transition, but only dropped population-weighted terms from 1970 onward for political civil liberties, as emergence authoritarian regimes increased its dispersion end World War I. In augmented human development declined 1900. These results are at odds with per capita income that rose over time shrank 1990 onward. The gap between OECD Rest world accounted partially within developing regions became main driver mid-20th century Countries middle lower deciles distribution achieved largest relative gain past century.
